- Summer Reading choice books extra credit reader's journals (up to two) due by Sept. 4. A typed, hard copy must be turned on or before Sept. 4 and you must also submit it to Safe Assign prior to your class period on Sept. 4. .
- Watch the film Dead Poet's Society. Write a 300+ word essay analyzing the effectiveness of Mr. Keeting's teaching methods. Include whether he shares any blame, and if so, how much for what happens near the end of the movie.
- Watch the film, Amistad. This film is rated R, so it’s up to you to secure parental permission in order to do this. After watching the film, write a well-organized essay (400-500 words) about what lesson(s) you learned from the film. I’m not talking about historical knowledge, I’m talking about lessons of life. Consider the theme of the film.
- Watch the film 1776 and write a well-organized essay (400-500 words) about the importance of debating and writing well, using scenes from the film as your support.
- Design your own magazine advertisement for a product of your own creation. Your add should employ pathos and use some propaganda techniques. Attach a paragraph explaining your use of pathos and the fallacies you use. This must show ample effort in order to be worth 10 points.
- Videotape your own commercial (at least 60 seconds) that utilizes pathos (and logos and ethos) as well as propaganda techniques. More than one person may work to do it, but the more people involved, the more effort must be shown. Each person in the group must to an equal share of the work.
- Watch the film, Good Night, and Good Luck (rated PG). Write an essay (400-500 words) explaining how journalist Edward R. Murrow exposed the tactics of Joseph McCarthy and arguing whether or not his subjective stance was warranted. Support your argument with evidence from the film and logical argumentation.
- Watch the film Who Killed the Electric Car? (Last I checked, this was available streaming on Netflix.) Write a 300+ essay analyzing the rhetoric of the film. Consider what argument the film-makers are making and how they achieve it.
- Make a book trailer for any of the books or stories we’ve read this year. Include credits at the end that list who did what in the making of the trailer and give appropriate documentation for songs, pictures, and video clips that you did not create yourself.
