- See the film Selma. Write a 300+ word essay about how non-violent protest--as depicted in the movie--helped bring about badly needed change. This choice will also be on the 4th nine weeks extra credit.
- You don't have to be interested in the New Zealand trip to do this extra credit, but it helps. Come to the student/parent meeting we're having at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14 in the meeting room of Helen Hall Library. (If you really are interested, bring a parent.) Take notes on the rhetoric of the presentation (which should be about 30-40 minutes long). Take on the persona of an interested person who wants to go and can afford to go but is just not sure about spending the money. Consider the dual audience we are trying to reach--students and parents--and how effective the presentation is for each. Consider the different aspects of the presentation and how each is part of the overall rhetorical message. Write a 300+ word rhetorical analysis of the presentation. Address the rhetoric we used, what was effective and what wasn't, and offer any suggestions for improvement. If you are going to do this, please write your name on my sheet to indicate that you are coming. (I need to know about how many people to expect. The room holds 100 and we are recruiting from 4 schools.)
- See the film The Imitation Game (currently in theaters). Write a 300+ word essay explaining how the film encourages the concept of thinking differently.
- Make a book trailer for any of the books or stories we’ve read this year. Include credits at the end that list who did what in the making of the trailer and give appropriate documentation for songs, pictures, and video clips that you did not create yourself. (Trailer should be approximately 2 minutes long.)
- Watch the movie Les Miserables, and write 300+ word review of the success of telling the story almost entirely with music and singing. Be sure to use specific examples to support your review.
- Watch the movie The Artist (winner of the Oscar for Best Picture in 2012), and write 300+ word essay about how the movie can tell a story so well with virtually no dialogue.
- Complete a Data Sheet for Adventures of Huck Finn. Turn in hard copy and submit to Safe Assign. The data sheet instructions can be found on the Documents page.
- See the film Zero Dark Thirty and write an essay on how you think it does or doesn't politicize the killing of Osama bin Laden.
- Find a piece of written rhetoric in a magazine, newspaper, or online, and write a 400+ word rhetorical analysis of it. Staple your essay on top of the article/essay.
- Complete a Data Sheet for The Great Gatsby. Turn in hard copy and submit to Safe Assign. The data sheet instructions can be found on the Documents page.
- Create a Facebook page for a character in The Great Gatsby. See documents on Documents page.
